Fortunately, deworming in cats can be done safely and effectively without any problems for your health or the health of your cat.

Therefore, the infection of cats with worms in the stomach does not cause concern, but you need to know what kind of worms are and how to treat them, as we will explain to you in this article in detail.

How are cat worms transmitted?

Cat worm infection depends on the type of worm, as each type of worm transmits in a different way to your cat.

But in general, cats become infected with worms through the transmission of the eggs of the worms, or through direct infection that is transmitted through the litter of other cats.

The feces infected with the worm eggs attach to your cat's fur, then your cat cleans itself.  these eggs move to the cat's stomach and thus become infected with the worms.

Cats may also hunt some rodents such as mice, which carry the worm larvae that live on their body tissues.  after the cats eat the rodents, these larvae enter the cat’s stomach, thus the larvae grow and the cat becomes infected with the worms.

I raise a cat in my house and it does not go out on the street .. How do you get infected with worms?

the most popular way to transmit worms to Indoors cats, who do not go out to the street or communicate with other cats, is the fleas.

Cat fleas carry worm eggs in their blood,  when the fleas bite your cat, they will transfer eggs to them in their blood.  thus the cat will be infected.

In the same way, worms may be transmitted from the mother cat to kittens through breastfeeding, as ringworms are transmitted in particular from the mother cat infected with the worms to the kittens during feeding.

Worms in Cats

What are the symptoms of worms in cats?

most diseases have symptoms,  worms in cats are no exception, thus there are certain important signs that you must know.

There are many symptoms that are likely to appear on your cat if it's infected with worms :

  • diarrhea.
  • Anorexia.
  • Vomiting (vomiting).
  • anemia.
  • Hair loss.
  • Blood in the stool.

The severity of symptoms depends on the type of worms that infect the cat, as well as the number of worms in the stomach. In general, ringworms and hookworms are the most severe types of worms that may infect a cat and cause serious symptoms.
If the vet confirms that your cat has worms, he will prescribe Drontal tablets to the cats according to the weight and severity of the infection.

What are the types of worms and what is the shape of cat worms?

The shapes of worms in cats are varied, you will not always be able to see what cat worms look like in the stool.

There is more than one type of worms in cats that infect them in different periods of their lives :

Roundworms
These are the most common types of worms that infect the cat's stomach. the length of cat ringworms ranges between 7 cm and 12 cm, these worms usually infect cats by feeding on infected rodents (mice) or by swallowing feces contaminated with worms or ringworm larvae.
Therefore, we always recommend cleaning the cat litter box periodically so that no infection is transmitted to the cats in the house.

Tapeworms
This type of worm is transmitted to cats by swallowing fleas infected with tapeworm eggs, or by feeding on mice and rodents infected with these worms.
These worms grow in the large intestine of cats. Then it breaks down, and some of it is excreted in the cat's feces.

Therefore, you may sometimes notice in your cat's feces some pellets that resemble rice or sesame, which do not exceed 1 cm in length. These are the tapeworms that have broken into the intestine of your cat and came out carrying the eggs of the tapeworms to transmit the infection to other cats.

It is worth noting that if these worms appear in your cat, the cat is most likely infected with fleas as well.

Hookworms
This type of cat worm is distinguished by its very small length, as it does not exceed 15 mm in length.  it is difficult to see it with the naked eye in the feces of cats.

Hookworms feed on the blood of cats, as they attach to the wall of the intestine and suck your cat's blood continuously.

Cats can be infected with this type of worm through the passage of larvae through the skin (by fleas and insects in general), or through the mouth.
The larvae settle in the lung and then the intestine, where they grow in the intestine and feed on the blood of your cat. As we have shown, cats are infected with this type of worms by 10 to 60%.

Whipworms
It is possible for cats to be infected with this type of worms, but the infection is rare. it affects dogs more often.

These worms settle in the large intestine, but they usually do not cause serious illness in cats.

How kittens become infected with worms

Because of their small size, experts stress that kittens may develop very serious complications if they are infected with worms, especially ringworms.
Due to the infection, they may suffer from anemia, weight loss, as well as blood loss.
Young cats, when they are in the stage of growth, will not be able to easily face the problems caused by infection, such as diarrhea and poor nutrition, as the immune system of small cats is not complete and does not work as efficiently as big cats.
Therefore, young cats are susceptible to many infections due to infection with worms.

You may notice that your cat has diarrhea, blood in the stool, vomiting, and weight loss, all of which are symptoms caused by internal parasites (worms) that try to feed on the food that your cat eats as well as on her blood.

How can a worm infestation be diagnosed in cats?

The veterinarian performs a physical examination of the cat. in most cases, the veterinarian will be able to find out that the cat is infected with worms without any additional measures.

The symptoms of worms in cats, as we have shown, are numerous, so a veterinarian can distinguish them in many cases without additional examination.

But in some cases, the veterinarian may need to examine the cat's stool under a microscope, or he may need to analyze a sample of the stool in a specialized laboratory.

In severe cases, the veterinarian may need a complete blood count to know the cat's health status, but this happens in very rare cases.

In the case that the doctor confirms that your cat has worms, he will prescribe a medication designed to treat cat worms, even if your cat does not show all the symptoms of a worm infection.

There are many medicines that treat worms in cats, which are considered very safe for cats if their dose is determined accurately by the veterinarian.

Treating worms in cats: Drontal tablets for cats

Drontal tablets for cats is one of the most popular anthelminthic drugs for cat's worms, which is very effective and very safe at the same time.

Drontal tablets are given to cats orally, and the appropriate dose is determined according to the weight of the cat and based on the veterinarian's opinion, based on the degree of infection and the number of worms in the cat.

An incorrect dose of Drontal tablets for cats may lead to serious complications in the cat, whether the overdose is at that time, poisoning the cat may occur or the dose is weak and does not affect the worms.

Therefore, we always recommend that you give any kind of medicine under the supervision of a veterinarian to ensure the health of your pet.
